RackTop Systems Named a Sample Vendor for Cyberstorage in Gartner® Hype Cycle™ for Storage and Data Protection Technologies, 2023

The On the Rise Category Recommends Prioritization of Active Defense Security Capabilities in Storage Systems to Defend Data Against Cyberattacks and Extortionware

July 25, 2023 – RackTop Systems, a leading and innovative provider of data storage solutions which actively defend against ransomware and insider threats, today announced the company has been positioned by Gartner as a Sample Vendor in the Hype Cycle for Storage and Data Protection Technologies, 2023 in the emerging cyberstorage market.

For the third year, cyberstorage adoption has been recommended with a transformational benefit rating of “high” to I&O leaders.

Gartner defines the emerging market, “Cyberstorage offers an active defense of the storage systems and their data against cyberattacks through prevention, early detection and blocking of attacks, and aids in recovery through analytics and storage-specific recovery capabilities. Cyberstorage can be a dedicated storage solution containing all capabilities, a platform solution containing multiple products offered as an integrated solution, or independent products that add cyberspecific capabilities toward storage vendors.”

Gartner reports that, “Ransomware attacks are increasingly common and disruptive, requiring the adoption of cybersecurity tools for active defense and recovery. Although numerous solutions are available for endpoint protection, object, file system and block storage systems provide inadequate protection from malicious downloads, deletion, destruction, or encryption of data. Cyberstorage provides active defense and recovery against cyberattacks on storage systems and their data.”

The business impact of ransomware and data extortion can be catastrophic to an organization, wiping out and encrypting systems and halting productivity. The report recognizes that cyberstorage “aids in prevention and recovery capabilities to protect storage systems against these disasters minimizing the impact and dependency on full recovery from backup systems.”

Among the immediate drivers for adopting cyberstorage technology, Gartner notes:

  • An increasing need for better protection due to the tripling of unstructured data across storage locations like on-premises, edge, and public cloud.
  • Large file repositories using standard access protocols such as SMB and NFS are the easiest to attack for both ransomware and data extortion.
  • Protecting and recovering from a ransomware attack requires a multifaceted strategy that includes a layered approach of multiple solutions that includes endpoint protection, immutable backups, and data storage infrastructure detection analysis and recovery as part of cyberstorage strategy.
  • Storage has become the backdoor for hackers and requires improved security and enhanced cyber protections.

The report states that ideally, cyberstorage features should be integrated into data storage and recommends that users review storage vendors’ active defense features to ensure that features like “ransomware detection, blocking the attack, advanced recovery and analytics functions and improved overall security hardening into their storage products. Ask for the vendors’ roadmap and validate if they support the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) framework standard.”

RackTop’s BrickStor Security Platform (SP) is the first end-to-end cyberstorage solution with active security to detect and stop live extortionware and ransomware attacks, insider threats, and data breaches in real-time. RackTop’s cyberstorage solution has the unique distinction of addressing all 5 functional areas of the NIST framework in a unified product. BrickStor SP stores and protects enterprise data at the edge, the core, or in the cloud. Organizations can maximize their existing storage investments by adding BrickStor SP to create a cyber resilient data-centric zero trust architecture. BrickStor SP runs within the customer’s infrastructure locally or in a hyper scaler cloud. It is also available as a service, as a customer managed or a RackTop managed offering.
